we know this morning about what happened at sandy hook elementary school. in about 30 minutes we expect authorities to hold a news conference right where i am and release the identities of the victims. police say 20 children between the ages of 5 and 10 were killed as well as six adults at the school including the principal and psychologist. sources say adam lanza was armed with three guns, two on him, one found in a car nearby. police say he got the guns from his mother who owned them. she was licensed to have them. she was found dead in her home about 2 1/2 miles from where i am now. every new detail helped paint a picture of a horrifying tragedy. cnn's anderson cooper explains how it unfolded moment by moment. >> all units, the individual i have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gun shots. >> reporter: the first word was chilling. it only got worse. >> they're reporting multiple fatalities involved in this shooting at the elementary school. >> reporter: with each new report, the horror deepened. >> reports say the number of dead closer to 30 than to 20,

gunman entered through the doors of sandy hook elementary school. we are awaiting a press conference, you're looking at that right now. it has not begun, but i do want to give those of you who have joined us a sense of what happened. tom foreman walks us through what happened yesterday morning minute by minute. >> this is what we know at this point about the timeline of the shooting reported by law enforcement officials and witnesses and the layout of the school as best we can piece it all together. 9:30 in the morning, classes had been underway for a half hour. more than 600 students and approximately 50 faculty members inside the building. in addition to that there's a meeting just convened by some of the school officials including the principal in a room somewhere right up here, about seven of them all gathered in one room. about 9:40, ten minutes later, as beck we can make it out, that's when the gunman appears to have entered the building. how? we don't know. they had a new security system right up here that might have kept him out, not sure what happened with that. police put a

who killed 26 people today at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled him a suspect. but he was taken away in handcuffs. his brother adam died at the scene. but police are not saying at this point if he killed himself. police did say that they did not discharge any of their weapons and yet he was dead on the scene. law enforcement sources also telling cnn that the shooter in this horrible tragedy was dressed in "black battle fatigues an

here in newtown, as well. she had been a teacher at the sandy hook elementary school. the school's principal dawn hochsprung was among those killed and tonight a friend remembered her as "quote, the kind of person you would want to be educating your kids. school psychologist mary sherlock was also kilged. this afternoon afternoon the brother, ryan lanza was taken in for questioning by police and he was handcuffed. officials did not label him a suspect. the gunman's father was also questioned in relation to what happened here today. tonight, a nation in mourning. candle light vigils were held in newtown and across the country. there was one just outside of the white house in washington, d.c. earlier today, president obama ordered flags to be flown at half staff nationwide in tribute to the victims of this terrible tragedy. in an emotional address, he said this to the nation. >> i know there's not a parent in america who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of those who died today were children. beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old.
